“Never Once Loved Death”—A short story written in exquisite corpse style by Kelly Norman and Cameron Hostetter

Four rabbits had died during the night. They had crawled into an open space between two small buildings, seeking warmth by folding their small bodies around one another, huddled in the dark. We found them that way in the morning, their grey fur matted with frost, their tiny eyes open, milky and lifeless. At first we stared back at them, imagining them for a moment more as they were when they were alive and happy, and then slowly the truth of it settled in and we went looking for a shovel.

The hard ground, nearly frozen solid, resisted the dull blade. It was in sharp contrast to how fragile and delicate life seemed at that instant. We took turns shoveling their tiny graves to fight the cold, and took swigs of whiskey in between goes to warm the rest of the way up. Unintentionally drunk, we patted the earth down in solid little mounds and held an impromptu funeral. No one suggested it, but it seemed like the best thing to do. I wasn’t the one who spoke first:

“Sorry for the bad day, little bunny buddies who only loved smelling the air and cuddling in pairs and never once loved death I don’t think.” Tears were wiped away before they could run down and form icicles on our noses.

“What should we do now?”

“Let’s go for a drive. Come on.” I held my hand out expectantly waiting for his.

We clambered into the big cab of the rusting old pickup truck. The paint had been worn away by decades of harsh winters, and what was left after a few attempts at new paint jobs was a color and patina that resembled atrophied flesh. We blew breath into our hands and watched it fog and disappear. I used to do this and pretend I was smoking cigarettes when I was younger.

He started the truck, which lurched and groaned as he put it in gear, but our minds were still fixed more on the bunnies we had just buried than on the road or where we were going. After a few miles he stopped the truck and leaned forward heavily on the steering wheel.

“I didn’t realize this would be so tough,” he started, not looking up. His patchy beard was white in parts, not from age but from toil and hard luck.

“Those rabbits were the only food we had left.”

this is a commercial i helped my friend make for darby's cafe in olympia. darby's sponsored a movie called the decline of western civilization part's 1 and 3, which are about punk music in the 80s and 90s, hence the punk theme. enjoy.

recently, i found out that several months ago, a person and artist who i admired very much had passed away. her name is suki berg, and she was 93 years old. she was still painting in her 90s, and as she was a close family friend, i was fortunate enough to spend enough time with her to create some joyful memories with her tremendously light and beautiful soul.

for nearly the last decade of her life, her health would decline, and suki and her family were convinced she was about to die, and then she would remarkably get better again. she would keep on taunting the world with her relentless and bright humor. i believe that she was ready to pass on, and i think she waited to meet her newborn grandson david before she left us. a favorite phrase of hers was to say, "i made a deal with the lord. i said take me instead of taking another young person's life." i know she had a very special impact on everyone who had the good fortune to meet her, she was truly a rare gem of such immeasurable spirit and wonder all contained in a tiny 4' 7" frame.

I have included some pictures of her artwork here, but this is just a tiny portion
of her extensive portfolio. i love you suki, knowing you was a true gift, and i'll miss your fire.

on september eleventh, i saw the band sleep at the roseland theartre in portland oregon. this is my revue of the concert:

"highs"
1. extreme hearing loss. it felt like being hit in the skull with a hammer for 2 hours. i had tinnitus for like 2 days straight. it was awesome.

2. fans. there was one in particular that i wanted to give the nobel prize. he was gigantic, and had a great big mustache. among many other totally sweet moves, he did super slow motion punches and ballerina spins through the pit and guarded people from being crushed when they fell down. he also yelled at people to shut up when sleep was playing a short instrumental piece. then i found out he was from olympia. i want to meet him and shake his hand.

3. memorial. as the encore was about to begin, scott kelly (shrinebuilder) took the mic, and asked the audience to join him in a moment of silence for our fallen hero...and paused. for moment, i was like, "oh yeah, it's 9/11, i was wondering if they were going to mention that." but then he continued and said "ronnie james dio." and of course, everyone just screamed in appreciation, instead of being silent, which was probably more appropriate. (side note: voodoo doughnuts did have a 9/11 themed doughnut with white frosting, red and blue sprinkles, and two pretzel sticks sticking up out of it.)

4. facial hair extravaganza. there were soooo many great mustaches and beards, i had to be careful not to stare though because many of the owners looked kind of scary. but it was one of the best unofficial gatherings of facial hair aficionados i have ever seen.

lows
1. illness. i have a cold, and i was maybe a little too tired to fully engage myself in 2 hours of doom metal.

2. fans. there were some real freak maleeks in the crowd. at one point, this dude was creeping me out and getting way to close to me, and i wanted to destroy him, but i just moved back a few rows. another guy hit me in the balls in the pit. i also helped pick someone up who fell, and i got his armpit sweat all over my hands.

3. what now? i think the worst part was knowing that i will never rock that hard or loud ever. it seemed to be impossibly loud, and impossibly doom-y. i'm starting a stoner/doom/drone metal band with my friend, and i'm feeling like there is no way to top sleep, so i'm gonna have to get really creative.

4. lack of documentation. besides the fact that i went to the show alone, i also didn't bring a camera, so i'll have to suffice with my cell phone pictures.

this kid is incredible. he got a staph infection, was in the hospital for 3 months, was given a 1% chance of living, and he's alive. the infection caused him to lose his sight in his right eye, and he is now recovering from surgery for it. we'll have to wait and see if he makes a full recovery, and is able to skate again...

these are some images from my most recent school project. they are plaster casts of a section of branch i found, installed in a really cool spot i found at evergreen. it's still on display, for those of you can see ghosts...

artist's statement:

With its back turned to the well-known path and the towering buildings, an ancient ghost sits and quietly stares into the woods. It is visited by the sunrise and birds and leaves and moss, but rarely humans. Even though it is in plain view from the buildings, it just looks like a normal stump from there. But when you wander past the pavement and the garden and into the forest, careful not to step on any little mushrooms, you can stand face to face with the ghost stump, which opens up like and altar, letting you know you are in a special place. Looking around, you realize you have in fact entered an entirely different world, a secret room that is only noticeable once you are inside it. It is calm, private, and still, yet only a few feet away from the busy cement world. From here you can sense life and death slowly chasing each other in circles. How did you end up here? You followed a trail of small ghostly statues, barely visible except to those who know treasure lies just off the beaten path, and their story is what you make of it.

wally's sandwich shop stopped offering QUITE POSSIBLY the BEST sandwich deal EVER. that's right, NO MORE five dollar subs on fridays. they still offer a competitive price on good subs with whatever you want on them for the same price, but their atmosphere hasn't gotten any better-in fact it's gotten worse. so if i go there again, it will be my stomach's decision, not my brain's or my wallet's.

i didn't go to bed last night. at around 5:50am or so, i ate a piece of toast and walked outside in bare feet. the sunrise was so breathtaking. i mean, really stunning. i had to go back and get my camera. i also put on my flip flops as i didn't plan on talking a walk.

as i live at the top of a hill, however, i naturally made my way down to the waterfront at the bottom. the quality of light this morning made everything crisp and pop out like 3-D glasses. the clouds were perfect. the water was still and more clear than normal, and reflected the sky like a mural.

crossing the bridge to downtown, i spotted an otter reclining in a little cove separated by the old train tracks. then i saw two more swimming around the inlet. i kept walking downtown. a guy went by on his bmx bike and did a sweet jump right in front of me.

i began examining every storefront as though i had never seen them before. capital city guitars has some ridiculously nice fenders right now, and a gorgeous silvertone. i passed by new moon cafe at 6:30am; they open at 7:00am. i kept going down 4th ave, and made it to the artesian well. it still gets me every time; totally free water, flowing all the time out of a copper pipe in a parking lot that no one really uses for parking.

i walked by the free wall and checked out the latest coats of spray paint. a man walking his pug without a leash came by, and the dog barked like i had offended him. i made it back to new moon at 6:55am, waited around for 5 minutes, and was the first one inside. i got the halo sandwich (egg, tomato, avocado, ham --> english muffin) and a short stack of pancakes, which was way too much food, but i ate it all. had i know the special i would have ordered the black metal pancakes. i sat there for an hour, drawing, talking to the waitress a little, and just soaking in what a classic cafe scene the new moon became with each new customer.

i left at exactly 8:01am, and as i walked back across the bridge, i saw more great blue herons than i have fingers. then i stared at what i soon realized was an adult bald eagle perched atop a pole in the middle of the inlet. i skidded down an embankment in my sandals down under the bridge to the train tracks to get a better look. i met several homeless men, and told them about the eagle, which seemed to surprise them less than my being there. i got a little ways out towards the bird, and it flew off, revealing its white tail feathers and six-foot wingspan.

i kept walking since i had come that far. i ended up in a construction zone, and walked out of it and straight onto the garfield nature trail. it was actually a shortcut to my street. i got home at 8:52am, just in time to say hello to my roommate before he caught the bus to work.

none of these have been photoshoped. i own a haunted Canon PowerShot S410. sometimes, but not always, it distorts an image it captures, often beyond recognition, and completely leaves me out of the decision making process. but i love her so.
