Reminds me of the myth of Esgiar, a figure of Estonian folklore. He was a masterful warlord and was at odds with a demi-god named Kulumi the Bitter Tongued. He spent 900 years in a salt mine underneath the Ungrian bogs his face started to petrify. He later died of petrification.
